During the 1990's, Jaffna's, a West Indian/Sri Lankan grocery store, was opened in the Jane & Finch mall. With a strong ethnic population in this area, the store became an instant success. Jaffna 's expanded its product range to appeal not only to the Caribbean and Sri Lankan market, but to African, Spanish, and Indian markets.
As the turn of the new millennium came, the Caribbean Grocery market was over saturated with small ethnic stores and at the same time the big grocery chains were expanding their ethnic product range. Competition was fierce. A big change was needed to keep the customers coming to the traditional ‘West Indian' store and at the same time compete with the ethnic competition.
With the experience from Jaffna 's a new concept was developed along with a new name, and image; Cactus Exotic Foods. Basically the concept is customer focused, providing superior service, and top quality products from ‘back home', in a super clean and super friendly environment with state of the art equipment. The store incorporates modern designs in an approximately 4000-5000 sq.ft. area (which is bigger than your typical W.I. store). In 2003, Cactus Exotic Foods was born with its first store located in Brampton , Ontario . In 2005 the ‘Cactus' concept replaced Jaffna 's.
Today Cactus Exotic Foods is regarded as the leader in Tropical Foods where customers are able to find quality products from ‘back home', all in a comfortable shopping environment.
